Israel and Bible Prophecy – Why Jerusalem Matters

Introduction

Israel is at the centre of Bible prophecy. No other nation has a role so specific in God’s plan. The return of the Jewish people and the world’s focus on Jerusalem are direct fulfilments of prophecy. This article explores why the nation of Israel and the city of Jerusalem are so crucial to understanding God’s prophetic timeline.

God’s Chosen People

For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.” Deuteronomy 14:2

The Bible also reveals God’s promise to gather His chosen people, Israel, back to their land. Ezekiel 36:24 states, “For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all countries and will bring you into your own land.” This promise of restoration is a key theme throughout the Old Testament and was miraculously fulfilled on May 14th, 1948, making this the greatest event in modern history.

Jerusalem as a Burdensome Stone

The world’s attention is fixed on Jerusalem. The city is a source of constant global tension and a focal point for international politics, drawing in diplomats, religious leaders, and activists alike who seek to navigate its complex history and cultural significance. Jerusalem stands not only as a geographical location but as a poignant symbol of faith, identity, and conflict.

The prophet Zechariah foretold this in Zechariah 12:2-3: “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”

Zechariah 12.2 3

This prophecy underscores a powerful truth: Jerusalem is not merely a piece of land but a city of divine purpose. The global focus and tension surrounding it are not random events but direct fulfilments of God’s plan. Understanding this provides us with unique insight into the unfolding of end-time events. You should prepare, remain vigilant, and recognise God’s influence in the world. The prophecy of the cup of trembling and the burdensome stone is a promise that no matter how powerful the opposition, God will defend Jerusalem, and His ultimate plan will not be thwarted.

Modern Fulfilment

The rebirth of Israel as a nation in 1948, after nearly 2,000 years, is possibly the most significant prophetic event of the last century. Jesus Himself predicted that the Gentiles would trample Jerusalem, but that this would eventually come to an end.

And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” Luke 21:24.

The liberation of Jerusalem in 1967 is seen by many as a signal that the “times of the Gentiles” are drawing to a close. The ongoing conflicts and the global focus on Israel and Jerusalem serve as constant reminders that we are witnessing the fulfilment of these prophecies.

Why It Matters

The destiny of Israel and the events unfolding in Jerusalem point directly to the soon return of Christ. Israel’s existence and its pivotal role on the world stage serve as a clear signpost that God’s plan is advancing toward its final conclusion. For believers, these events are not just news headlines; they are confirmations of biblical truth and a call to readiness.

As events continue to unfold, we are reminded of the prophetic importance of Israel. The Bible encourages us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.” Psalm 122:6

By doing so, we not only obey a biblical command but also align our hearts with God’s purposes, recognising Israel’s central role in the unfolding of His end-time plan.
